Ghana’s Big Push Road Initiative to Operate 24 hours

Ghana’s Minister of Roads, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that contractors working on the Big Push infrastructure programme will be required to operate 24 hours a day.

This directive aligns with the government’s broader 24-hour economic policy, which aims to accelerate development and boost productivity.

Speaking at the launch of the project in Ho, Volta Region, Agbodza expressed confidence in the selected contractors, particularly First Sky Limited, stating they could complete the Atimpoku to Aflao road segment in under two years.

He emphasized the importance of quality work and warned that any substandard construction would be rectified through insurance claims.

To speed up progress and create employment, contractors were encouraged to hire more workers, especially recent graduates in engineering and construction-related fields.

The initiative also includes mentoring opportunities to help young professionals gain practical experience.

The Volta Region segment of the Big Push covers 177 kilometers across nine sections, with upgrades such as wider roads, stronger pavements, asphalt surfacing, and improved safety features.

The overall programme, launched by President Mahama, encompasses 42 road projects nationwide and is backed by a budget of GH¢13.85 billion (US$892.9 million).
